The best wines of Europe, with official designation of origin, are in Spain, France and Italy. In each of these countries with winemaking tradition there are several regions that have this certification of guarantee. We visit some of these areas in search of new and good wine experiences.
SPAIN, La Rioja
This designation of origin is located in the north of Spain and it is divided into three regions: the Basque Country, Navarra and La Rioja. The best plan is to rent a car and explore its cities and towns, stopping at its great restaurants. The distances are reduced and the endless landscape of vineyards and small towns, with their slow flavor of years ago, made the trip memorable. This area is interesting from all angles: its history, geography, wine and gastronomy, the last recognized with the prestigious Michelin stars, as in the case of the Marques de Riscal, Venta Moncalvillo or Echaurren El Portal restaurants. The high quality of the cuisine in this area is common. In this country everything smells of wine, it seems that even their local products, such as asparagus, peppers, thistles or even their meats have been created to perfectly pair with their wines.
The Hotel Marqués de Riscal is the star of the region. The work of Frank Gehry and its colorful titanium waves form a unique landscape in the outskirts of the town Elciego. It has a spa.
La Finca de Los Arandinos is ideal for traveling in couple. From its romantic rooms created by the Spanish designer David Delfin, you can see a huge field that will relax your eyes and your senses. It has only 18 rooms.
The Hotel Echaurren with the restaurant with the same name, located in the historic center of the mountainous city, is the perfect place to enjoy a few days in the most delightful accommodation. Don’t miss the spectacular gourmet breakfast with organic products and the attention of its staff, your stay will become an unforgettable experience.
FRANCE, Bordeaux and Burgundy
Who has not at some time tasted a French wine? The second country with the highest production, after Spain, is a leader in the union. There are many areas to visit, but we have chosen two: Bordeaux and Burgundy.
There are two areas in Bordeaux: Haut-Médoc and Saint-Emilion, a small and pretty town where we recommend the Chäteau Cordeillan-Bages for a stay. A monastery of XVII century, with a spectacular silence and beautiful rooms.
The beautiful Burgundy region and the cities of Beaune and Dijon are perfect for an evening. It is curious that in the world of wine, as in other sectors, fashion or decoration, there are fashionable wines and are the hit of the moment. These are villages that you cannot miss, where their local Burgundian wines are a must now: Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Romanée Conti.
ITALY, Verona and Tuscany
Good weather, excellent company and kilometers ahead to enjoy two typical Italian wine regions. Because in addition to the delicious pasta, the Italian wines enjoy of an excellent reputation. Valpolicella is the wine region to which one of the most beautiful cities in Italy belongs: Verona. You must try its wines: Amarone, Recioto, Ripasso, Soave. We recommend spending the night in the spectacular Palazzo Victoria.
The Maremma is a region comprising part of the wonderful Tuscany. Stroll around Montalcino, a Tuscan village and taste the Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino wines.
Travelling to Europe and visiting these three countries in their best wine version is, without a doubt, a journey for the senses.
